The historic value of Glenaladale

Much credit must be given to the volunteer board members

- Patricia Power Former Glenaladale student

It is exciting to witness ongoing developments at the Glenaladale Estate, especially the restoration of the historic Glenaladale School. Those of us who live in the community and beyond owe a debt of gratitude to the individuals who recognized the historic value of Glenaladale and when the property was listed for sale in 2012 were leaders in the effort to save Glenaladale. They were effective in educating the public, gathering supporters and donors and developing a brilliant vision for Glenaladale where a family home would become a peoples home — a cultural centre belonging to everyone. See the excellent website www.glenaladalepei.com.

The Glenaladale Heritage Trust was incorporated in 2015 and in March 2018 with funding from the Canadian Heritage Cultural Spaces Program and additional financing from the Province, the Trust obtained title to the Glenaladale Estate.

Much credit must be given to the volunteer board members of the Glenaladale Heritage Trust led by chair Mary J. Gallant and vice-chair Aggi-Rose Reddin. They are the group with the ultimate responsibility for overseeing developments at Glenaladale. At present they are busy with plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Glenaladale settlers with events beginning June 25, 2022.

The Glenaladale Heritage Trust was very encouraged by the March 15, 2021, announcement of grants from the federal government’s Legacy Fund and the province of Prince Edward Island confirming that the restoration and plans for the Glenaladale Estate should be supported. The chair, Mary J. Gallant, in acknowledging this funding noted that there is much to be done at Glenaladale and that the trust will continue its fundraising with a goal of raising $300,000.

As we watch the historic Glenaladale School given new life and purpose, I invite students and teachers of the former school communities of Glenaladale, Tracadie Cross and Tracadie Cross Consolidated to contribute to the ongoing fundraising efforts at Glenaladale. Donations may also be made in memory of teachers and students. You can donate online at www. glenaladalepei.com or by mail to the Glenaladale Heritage Trust Inc. 1035 Mount Stewart Rd., Maple Hill, PE COA 1TO.

For further information contact Mary J. Gallant at glenaladalepei@gmail.com or call 902-394-6131.

Trusting we will get more than “a passing grade” in this project.
