X-men hand Panthers first loss

UPEI women sweep their weekend games at home

The St. Francis Xavier X-men handed the UPEI Panthers their first loss of the 2022-23 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Men’s Basketball Conference on Nov. 12.

The X-men posted a 96-67 victory to split a two-game series at the Chi-wan Young Sports Centre on the UPEI campus. UPEI defeated the X-men 89-84 on Nov. 11.

The Panthers won both games against visiting St. Francis Xavier. The scores were 85-63 on Nov. 12 and 73-59 on Nov. 11.

Both UPEI teams travel to Fredericto­n, N.B., to take on the UNB Reds in four-point games on Nov. 19.

MEN X-MEN 96 PANTHERS 67

A quick start paced the X-men, who built a 32-19 after one quarter and took a 65-34 advantage into halftime before 354 fans.

Dondre Reddick led the way for the X-men with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Deon Ejim (18) and Antoine Vernon (11) also made big offensive contributi­ons.

Dakelle Brooks (18), Kamari Scott (16) and Isaiah Ankra (15) were the top point-getters for UPEI, which sits at 5-1 (won-lost).

PANTHERS 89 X-MEN 84

The Panthers outscored the X-men 27-20 in the third quarter and 24-21 in the final quarter to overcome a 43-38 deficit at the half.

Elijah Miller scored a game-high 32 points to lead the Panthers. Isaiah Ankra added 23 points and Scott sank 16.

Reddick (22), David Muenkat (11) and Ejim (10) were the leading offensive producers for the X-men (5-1).

WOMEN PANTHERS 85 X-WOMEN 63

The Panthers, who are off to a 4-2 start, led 49-43 at the half and outscored the Xwomen 22-9 in the third period to open a 71-52 cushion.

Lauren Rainford’s 27-point performanc­e led the Panthers, who received 17 points from Aiden Rainford and 15 from Alicia Bowering. Karla Yepez recorded a game-high 11 boards.

Aliyah Fraser (18), Melina Collins (16) and Ekaterina Karchevska­ya (10) were the top scorers for the Xwomen (0-6).

PANTHERS 73 X-WOMEN 59

Lauren Rainford (23), Yepez (17) and Bowering (14) combined to score 54 points for the Panthers. Sydney Cummins chipped in with eight rebounds for UPEI.

Fraser (19), Karchevska­ya (17) and Collins (15) led the X-women.

UPEI led 33-31 at the half.
