Men hockey Panthers continue strong play

UPEI women drop one-goal decision to Huskies

The UPEI Panthers continued their strong play in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Men’s Hockey Conference on Nov. 12.

The Panthers, behind Lucas Fitzpatric­k’s 19-save shutout, defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 2-0 for their third win in a row and eighth in 10 games.

TJ Shea scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 7:47 of the middle frame before 697 fans at Maclauchla­n Arena. Darian Pilon added a short-handed unassisted goal at 17:43 of the third period as the Panthers improved to 8-4-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses).

Troy Lajeunesse and Kyle Maksimovic­h chipped in with helpers.

The Panthers directed 37 shots at Alexander Macdonald, who made 35 saves for the Tigers (1-10-0-1).

Both teams went 0-for-6 on the power play.

The Panthers host the Acadia Axemen (3-8-1-0) on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.

WOMEN

In women’s action Nov. 11, the visiting Saint Mary’s Huskies built period leads of 2-1 and 3-1 in a 3-2 win over the Panthers.

Mackenzie Beggs (1-1), Shae Demale and Jillian Duggan scored for the Huskies (7-4-0-0).

Ruby Loughton and Orianna Macneil each contribute­d a goal and an assist for the Panthers (6-5-1-0). Taylor Gillis added a pair of assists.

UPEI held a 29-16 shotson-goal advantage. Ridleigh Hansen earned the goaltendin­g win over Sarah Forsythe.

UPEI had a 2-for-5 summary on the power play while Saint Mary’s went 1-for-2.

The Panthers head out on the road to play the St. Thomas Tommies (5-7-0-0) on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m., and the Moncton Blue Eagles (2-9-00) on Nov. 19 at 2 p.m.
