Hurricanes volleyball, basketball teams undefeated in weekend action

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams went undefeated over the weekend in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) regular season play.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Hurricanes travelled to Saint John, N.B., on Nov. 19, defeating the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves 3-1 with set scores of 25-12, 25-20, 22-25 and 26-24.

Cameron Calhoun led the way offensivel­y for the Hurricanes with 12 kills, an assist and a service ace, while Luke Hyde recorded 11 kills, 10 assists, three blocks, a service ace and a dig.

With the win, the 'Canes improve to 2-3 on the season and sit in third in the conference. The Hurricanes will play two more games against the Seawolves before the holiday break when they host UNBSJ on Nov. 26 and Nov. 27 at the Mcmillan Centre in Charlottet­own.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Hurricanes women's volleyball team rebounded from two straight losses with a win on Nov. 20, defeating the Crandall University Chargers 3-1 with set scores of 25-14, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-18.

Jenna O'neill led the team with 17 kills, and Charlotte Sweetapple and Morgan White added seven each.

The Hurricanes improve to 4-2 on the season and are tied for third with the University of King's College (UKC), just two points behind Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) and Mount Allison University, who share the top spot.

The Hurricanes will be back in action next Nov. 27, when they host UNBSJ at the Mcmillan Centre in Charlottet­own.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The women's basketball Hurricanes travelled to Saint John, N.B., on Nov. 20, winning their second regular season matchup against the UNBSJ Seawolves with a final score of 95-41.

Lisa Bolander led all scorers with 28 points for the Hurricanes, while Sheleese Hoilet had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The ‘Canes move to 5-1 on the season and lead the ACAA standings ahead of both MSVU and St. Thomas University (STU), who are 4-1 and two points back.

The Hurricanes return to action on Nov. 25 when they hit the road to take on Crandall at 6 p.m. in Moncton, N.B. Their next home game is scheduled for Dec. 3, versus MSVU at the Mcmillan Centre in Charlottet­own.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The men's basketball Hurricanes remained undefeated with a 102-72 victory over the UNBSJ Seawolves on Nov. 20.

Jalen Menzies and Logan Rempel led the 'Canes with 17 points each, while Jack Macaulay had 13-points, seven rebounds and six-assists.

The 'Canes are now 6-0 on the season and continue to lead the ACAA conference standings.

The Hurricanes return to action on Nov. 25 when they travel to Moncton, N.B., to take on the Crandall Chargers at 8 p.m. Their next home game is set for Dec. 3 versus the MSVU Mystics at the Mcmillan Centre in Charlottet­own.
