DOIRON, Leo

-

Leo Doiron passed away after a brief illness on February 19, 2024 at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, aged 89 years. He was born and grew up in Charlottetown, the youngest son of Rudolph and Josephine (Dowling) Doiron. Predeceased by brothers Elmer, Lorne and Vincent, and sister Bernice. Beloved husband of Bernadette, who died in 2013. Loving dad to Jean, Andre (Sheila), Lorna (Mark) McGillis and Margot (Kevin) Austin. Dear Poppy to grandchildren Terry, Gabriel, Claire, Aidan, Brock, Morgan, Alana and Laurel, and great grandchildren Roe and Lorena.

Leo graduated from St. Dunstan’s University (now University of Prince Edward Island) in Charlottetown in 1957 with a Commerce degree. He completed graduate studies in Hospital Administration at the University of Toronto in 1963. After working as a Business Administrator at Riverside Hospital, he and his growing family moved to Peterborough, ON, where he became Assistant Administrator of Peterborough Civic Hospital. Leo spent the bulk of his career as Executive Director of St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Peterborough and concluded his career at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Matheson, ON.

Leo was a kind-hearted, creative and social person who loved to spend time with family and to travel. He doted on his grandchildren, never missing birthdays, sporting events, holidays and Sunday dinners. Leo showed a genuine interest in the life and events of all his children and grandchildren. He returned to Prince Edward Island frequently, enjoying golf, the beach, seafood and catching up with old friends at class reunions. His other travels took him around the globe to destinations like China, Russia, The Holy Land, across Europe and beyond. In his retirement, Leo kept active at Katchiwano Golf Club in Lakefield in the warmer months, while winters were for curling – the sport he and Bernadette grew to love during their time in Northern Ontario.

Leo’s strong faith and generosity enriched the community through his many volunteer and charitable activities. He was a quiet soul whose actions spoke volumes.
