MERGING PAST WITH PRESENT

-

Today I happened upon a fascinating video as I was signing into a gardener's channel. Jason in B.C. grows and sells mostly roses, but many of his information works just as well for anyone who works to live frugally and to help themselves by growing food.

Having read The Guardian daily I'm aware that much discussion has and is taking place regarding the future of P.E.I. Agrivoltaics (search Youtube for Everything you need to know about agrivoltaics by Disruptive Investing News) would be worth considering for the Island of sandy soil and high food production as farmers struggle to keep their lands profitable in hard times. And hopefully out of the hands of distant developers.

Progress through meeting housing needs is important but if you lose the aesthetic that gives value through tourism, good luck in the future. Islands in particular need recurring dollars and word of mouth advertising.

I recently learned that a southern town put in place a law which stipulates that no buildings high enough to compete with the spire of a beautiful and beloved church be allowed. Funds would be made available to help people keep lovely old houses in fresh paint and help with gardens. I visited a community in Great Britain where young couples who have saved to buy a first home are given big stipends to live in old-style cottage homes, no modernizing allowed beyond bathrooms, etc. What a great idea for affordable homes for young couples or especially well-employed singles. That village draws hordes of tourists yearly to keep growing the economy in the whole region. Seems that everyone wants to see the cottages and homes from their favourite books, old movies and memories of their grandparent's photos or stories.

Progress should come in multiple ways. Keep the best of the old, add the sensible aspects of the new that enhance sustainability. Make people feel pride of self, pride of place and you have a viable future. Ilona Hannah,
