P.E.I. champions crowned
Hughes, Reid top women’s team; Sweet, Matheson take men’s title
P.E.I. crowned its 2024 stick curling champions at the Cornwall Curling Club recently.
The Elaine Hughes and Etta Reid duo from the host club won the women’s division. Bob Matheson and Clair Sweet from the Mill Riverbased West Prince Curling Club teamed up to capture the men’s division.
In the women’s final, Cornwall’s Bernie Field and Margaret
Stewart were up over the defending champions 4-1 at the mid-game point. But Hughes and Reid recovered by scoring three in the fourth end and another three in the fifth for a final score of 7-4.
“It was exciting to win. It’s an up-and-coming game, and this is our fifth championship. It’s always a privilege to be able to represent P.E.I,” said Hughes.
In the men’s division, the Matheson/sweet team finished with a record of 8-0, beating Cornwall’s Bernard Keefe and George Piercey 3-2 in the final. Keefe/piercey finished with a 4-3 record.
“It was a tight game, so it felt good to win”, said Matheson. “We had a big draw in the fourth end that really helped us win the game.”
POPULARITY
This year’s event featured the largest field to date with 10 women’s teams and 17 men’s teams registered to play in the pooled round-robin competition with a championship round. Stick curling is a twoperson-per-team event with six-end games.
The top three teams in each division, along with the top three teams from the mixed stick championship in December, have earned the right to advance to the Maritime stick curling championships at the West Prince Curling Club in March.
The 2024 Canadian stick curling championships will be held at the Leaside Curling Club in Toronto, April 17-21.
