Jail time for theft, flight from police
Malcolm Vernon Glover sentenced to 20 months and 15 days
A P.E.I. man with a history of driving convictions has been sentenced for his most recent offences of flight from police and driving while disqualified.
Malcolm Vernon Glover, 50, was sentenced on Feb. 26 in provincial court in Charlottetown for those offences as well as theft under $5,000 and missing a court appearance on Nov. 15. Glover pleaded guilty to the charges. Glover appeared in court by video from the Provincial Correctional Centre and represented himself at sentencing.
FACTS
Crown attorney Chee Ng told the court that on June 10 at 3:45 a.m., Charlottetown police tried to pull over a suspicious Honda Civic driving on Orlebar Street. The vehicle – driven by Glover – fled at a high rate of speed and drove through stop signs without stopping and recklessly in the residential area. Ng noted that traffic was light at that time, but there were several vehicles parked on the side of the road.
Police found the Honda Civic abandoned in a field off John Street. The RCMP's dog services led police to a residence where Glover was found inside injured. Glover was taken to the hospital for treatment. Glover's driver's licence was also suspended at that time until 2029 as a result of provincial legislation.
THEFT FROM SUPERSTORE
On Dec. 15, Glover was at the Atlantic Superstore in Charlottetown at 465 University Ave. He placed 61 items valued at $724.64 in a shopping cart and tried to leave the store without paying. A security feature on the shopping cart caused the wheels to lock up at the exit. Glover left the store, and the items were recovered by staff. The shoplifting offence was captured on the store's video surveillance footage.
66 PRIOR CONVICTIONS
Glover's criminal record had 66 prior convictions, including a sentence of two years less a day and a threeyear driving ban in 2015 for offences. These offences included failing to stop for police and driving while disqualified.
Glover explained in court that he broke his wrist climbing over a fence after abandoning the vehicle. He added that he was doing well and had a job until that night when he got drunk and drove the car. Glover also said that he no longer takes methamphetamine, but alcohol is still an issue.
SENTENCE
Ng recommended a sentence of two years less a day for all of the offences.
Chief Judge Jeff Lantz imposed a slightly shorter sentence totalling 20 months and 15 days in jail.
The sentence breaks down into 15 months for flight from police, 15 months concurrent for driving while disqualified, four months consecutive for theft under $5,000 and an additional 45 days in jail for missing court. Glover was also sentenced to two years of probation and a five-year driving ban.
