An altercation while waiting in line for pizza has led to jail time for a P.E.I. woman for two counts of common assault.

Haley May Dawn Doiron, 23, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Feb. 21 in provincial court in Charlottetown for the charges.

On Dec. 10, a woman and her friend were at Alexandra’s Pizza on Grafton Street at 2:25 a.m. waiting in line to order, said Crown attorney Jeff Macdonald at sentencing. Doiron was standing near the front of the line and got into an altercation with another person. The woman said “hey, girls” in an attempt to help the situation. Doiron yelled back at the woman. The woman and her friend didn’t know Doiron.

FIGHT OUTSIDE PIZZA RESTAURANT

The women were inside the restaurant for about 20 minutes. When they got their pizza, they left and walked towards Kent Street to try to get a taxi.

Doiron was also outside and yelled at them. Doiron lunged at one of the women and brought her to the ground by her hair. Doiron’s friends held her back and the woman got up from the ground.

Doiron broke free and lunged at the same woman and knocked her to the ground again. Doiron continued to pull the woman’s hair and kicked her.

The woman’s friend dropped her pizza and tried to intervene. This time, Doiron attacked the other woman. She was also knocked to the ground by Doiron, who grabbed her hair. Doiron punched the second woman several times while she was on the ground, said Macdonald.

ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTS

A man at the scene told the assault victims the unknown attacker was “Haley.” Both victims then got into a taxi. The taxi driver said the assaults were captured on his dash camera.

Doiron was later arrested and gave a statement to Charlottetown police. Doiron said she was heavily intoxicated that night. She did not deny assaulting the women but did say her memory was “cloudy” due to her intoxication.

Doiron had a prior criminal record with no prior convictions for assault, said Macdonald.

Legal-aid lawyer Chris Van Ouwerkerk discussed his client’s personal circumstances. He said Doiron has been sober from hard drugs, including crack cocaine and methamphetamine, for three years. Doiron has an occasional drink of alcohol but that night “got out of hand” and she regrets what happened, he said.

Chief Judge Jeff Lantz noted that it can only take one punch to have a more tragic outcome, such as death.

Lantz sentenced Doiron to 30 days in jail for the first assault and 30 days concurrent for the second assault along with 18 months of probation. Doiron was also sentenced to pay $200 in victim surcharges.

Lantz allowed Doiron to serve the sentence on intermittently at the Provincial Correctional Centre from Monday at 6 p.m. to Thursday at 6 a.m. It was noted in court by Van Ouwerkerk that Doiron works on weekends at a Charlottetown restaurant.

Doiron was also required to write letters of apology to the victims.
