CANADA IS NOT BROKEN

-

Why is Pierre Poilievre campaigning when an election has not yet been called? Does he really understand the Canadian political system? The American political system is always campaigning but not the Canadian one. Canada usually has about six weeks of campaigning once an election has been called. I can assure you that is enough time for all Canadians.

My American friends think that we have the best system in the world — and we do. Also, why is he using his children as political props in his TV ads? Children should never be used for political purposes. I have seen four of Poilievre's ads and his children have been used in three of them. In the last ad I have seen, he is there with his young child and a puzzle of Canada. In this ad, he says that Canada is “unaffordable, broken, divided and unsafe.” Imagine speaking these words in front of your child, no matter how young that child is. Then he puts the last missing piece in the puzzle of Canada and, voilà, he is saying he will make Canada whole again.

I can assure you that Canada is the best country in the world to live in and it is not “unaffordable, broken, divided or unsafe.” Yes, Canada is a family and, like any family, can be dysfunctional at times. If you feel so strongly that Canada is “unaffordable, broken, divided and unsafe,” I suggest you move to another country. Spend a year outside of Canada and I know that you would never again call Canada “unaffordable, broken, divided and unsafe.”

I firmly believe that an election should not be called before fall of 2024 or spring of 2025 and that Poilievre, Justin Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh should all resign. We need a strong person with integrity and values like those of Liz Cheney and Angela Merkel (two woman whom I greatly admire). Two suggestions I have in mind are Mark Carney, the former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, and Frank Mckenna, the former premier of New Brunswick. Canada certainly needs a strong leader at this point in time. Eileen Gauthier,
