Mariners answer back against Caps

Despite being outshot, Yarmouth pulls out road win to even MHL playoff series

The Yarmouth Mariners bounced back in a big way.

Jerome Nadeau’s goal 55 seconds into the third period broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Mariners a 4-3 win over the Summerside D. Alex Macdonald Ford Western Capitals on March 17.

The win evens the best-ofseven Eastlink South Division semifinal series 1-1 in the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) at 1-1.

The Caps, who won Game 1 by a 7-3 score on March 16, travel to Yarmouth, N.S., for Games 3 and 4 on March 22 and 23. Game 5 will be back in Summerside on March 26.

Before 1,084 fans at the Island Petroleum Energy Centre, the Capitals outshot the Mariners 39-29, including a 17-10 advantage in the third period.

However, Mariners goaltender Thomas Fontaine, who was pulled in the first minute of the third period of Game 1 after giving up six goals on 35 shots, bounced back with a strong 36-save performanc­e.

Drew Sim had a quieter night in the Caps’ goal and finished with 25 saves.

Keefe Marshall of Cornwall, P.E.I., Nick Dyson and Liam Trenholm also scored for the Mariners. Nathan Carter (2), Will Chisholm (2) and Fabrice Bourgeois added assists.

Robbie Rutledge (1-1), Jacob Squires (1-1) and Blake Eastman scored for the Capitals, who held 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 leads. William Irvine, Reid Vos and Lincoln Waugh chipped in with helpers.

The score was tied 1-1 after the first period and 3-3 at the end of 40 minutes.

The Caps went 2-for-4 on the power play while the Mariners had a 1-for-3 summary.

The game’s three stars were: 1. Jerome Nadeau (Mariners), 2. Nathan Carter (Mariners), 3. Blake Eastman (Capitals).
