From pages to screens

If curling up with Ryan Gosling isn’t an option, then curl up with a good book

Did you know the public library has books?

For free?

What a concept. I am a voracious reader and there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing your favourite series on the big screen. That is, unless they get the casting wrong or you realize you mispronounced a character’s name in your head for 500 pages. Then it’s infuriating.

Here are books being made into TV shows or movies I am itching to watch (or maybe I’m itching because my house hasn’t been deep-cleaned due to all the reading).

1. "FOURTH WING (THE EMPYREAN, NO. 1)" BY REBECCA YARROS

This book has 528 pages, which seems daunting until you start reading and wish it was longer. Categorized as a fantasy romance novel, this book is akin to an adult Harry Potter. Take "The Hunger Games" but add telepathic dragons and magic and scenes that make you blush.

The book is set at an elite war college, and the story is filled with feuds, sexual tension and subtle political commentary. Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights to the book and it is being worked into a TV series that will eventually make its way to Prime Video.

2. "TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN" BY JOHN GREEN

High school student Aza Holmes begins investigating the disappearance of a fugitive billionaire, roped in by her best friend and the lure of a $100,000 reward.

I rated this book 2 out of 5 stars on Good Reads, but John Green’s "The Fault in Our Stars" was a 5 out of 5 for me, and the movie was a flawless replica of the book, so I’m eager to see another of Green’s books made into a movie. The film version of "Turtles All the Way Down" found a streaming home on HBO Max or Crave this spring.

3. "APPLES NEVER FALL" BY LIANE MORIARTY

This No. 1 New York Times bestseller became a Peacock original TV series and is now available on Apple TV.

“If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father?” That

line in the description had me hooked. "Apples Never Fall" is a mystery drama miniseries about family dynamics and secrets, starring Annette Bening, Alison Brie, Jake Lacy and Sam Neill.

4. "THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO" BY TAYLOR JENKINS REID

This TikTok famous, New York Times bestselling book is being adapted into a film for Netflix. The uber-famous, Evelyn Hugo, grants the exclusive tell-all interview of her life to a seemingly unknown reporter.

The story is woven through the interviews and reveals all the secrets and great loves of Evelyn’s career and lifetime. The story is surprising, juicy and captivating from start to finish. Another of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books, "Malibu Rising," is being made into a TV show for Hulu.

Now all we need is 47 hours of free time so we can watch all of these TV shows and movies!

Whether it’s a Reddit rabbit hole, Tik Tok trending or a Hollywood hot topic, Keely Turner's hot take can be found here every second Saturday.
