A&S Scrap Metals Helping Islanders Recycle Safely and Efficiently

The recycling depot is the largest, locally owned scrap yard on Prince Edward Island

When it comes to scrap metal recycling, sales and more, it’s important to work with an experienced team that will help you manage your scrap metal needs. One small business in Charlottetown offers a range of services and is a local option for Islanders.

Located on Day Avenue, A&S Scrap Metals specializes in the buying, processing and recycling of scrap metals, including steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and copper.

Clinton Myers, owner and operator of A&S Scrap Metals, purchased the company in 2018 from the previous owner, Alan Stewart.

“I have been in this business since I graduated high school over 20 years ago, and I knew there were a lot of off-Island companies coming over here and doing this kind of work, so I saw an opportunity for growth for myself and the Island,” says Myers.

“I think keeping things local is great for the economy, and we love to support our community as best we can. We also have all our maintenance done locally and try to shop here as much as possible,” he continues.

GROWING THE BUSINESS

Since Myers took over the business, it has become a leader in scrap metal recycling on Prince Edward Island and has one of the largest scrap yards on the Island — which allows them to provide many services for their customers.

“We have added a number of services since 2018 and we are always looking to expand,” says Myers.

A&S started with around 12 employees, and now they have grown to 25 employees and are looking to expand their workforce and expertise.

“Nobody offers our level of service, and we try to cater to the customer as much as possible from things like our online store, live scale email ticketing and more. We are very modern and well equipped to handle all types of needs.”

Myers adds that because A&S is so well-rounded and has all the resources on-site to perform jobs, it allows them to keep business on the Island, while other companies would have to bring resources from off the Island.

The new online store offers customers an easy shopping experience where they can check inventory, prices of steel products and request new products.

“When you order right from online, that’ll come to our team, and they can prepare the order before you even arrive. That way, there’s no waiting,” says Myers.

EXPANDING ECOFRIENDLY SERVICES

A&S provides over 30 years of knowledge in the industry, allowing the business to be a success, both financially and environmentally. One of the company’s new services is car crushing. A&S can haul away your old vehicle and crush it on-site.

“We do custom car crushing, which is a new service. We go around to different junk yards across P.E.I. and crush them for recycling,” explains Myers.

They have also recently added a rebar bending service, and you can buy rebar straight from A&S, along with new structural steel products.

A&S’s eco-friendly approach to the recycling process ensures their staff is up to date on how to effectively and efficiently recycle all types of materials, including metals and electronics.

“We make sure to follow all the guidelines laid out to ensure we drain the fluids out of the vehicles properly, and ensure all recycled materials are properly sorted so it can be used again,” says Myers.

“We also provide staff with an online certification course that educates them on the best ways to recycle and upgrade materials to keep all staff knowledgeable on the most effective ways to recycle,” he continues.

The company has now started collecting electronic waste from the public, including cell phones, laptops, computers and much more.

“We are giving people another option so this type of waste doesn’t end up in landfills,” says Myers. “We provide money-back programs for most e-waste materials, whereas a lot of the programs out there now are not paying for e-waste materials.”

A&S always tries to ensure their equipment is up to date and working as efficiently as possible to leave less of a carbon footprint. They have recently done this by upgrading their trailers so they can haul more materials safely and effectively.

“Collection is a big part of our business, and we want to work in the best way possible for the environment and our customers,” says Myers. “We also want to showcase the beauty of our Island, and properly collecting and recycling scrap metals from our fields and hedge lines allows us to do that.”

Recently, A&S has expanded their commercial bin collector program to around Charlottetown and the greater Charlottetown area.

“We provide customers a professional bin, provide a quick service for exchange of bins, and we pay for the material that we collect, which a lot of our competition doesn’t pay for,” says Myers.

A&S is one of the only scrap metal companies that offer convenient payment options such as wire transfer, cheque, and cash. They have competitive pricing for materials and provide detailed receipts with every transaction.

“Besides paying for your recycling scraps, we also give you Air Miles. You can get rid of unwanted materials, get paid to bring it to the yard, and as an add-on, you can also get Air Miles,” says Myers.

A&S works with all types of tradespeople, like plumbers, electricians and demolition contractors, to haul and recycle metals and provide services for large and small projects.

“I want to keep expanding A&S and continue to provide the Island with the best services possible,” says Myers.
