MOYNAGH (Cash), Doris Jean

May 19, 1929 – March 25, 2024

-

Rejoice for God has called you to His heavenly home! Doris (Cash) Moynagh, in her 95th year, went home to Jesus peacefully with loved ones by her side on March 25, 2024, at Prince County Hospital, Summerside, PEI due to complications from an infection.

Doris was born on May 19, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, the first daughter of John Vincent and Beatrice Cash. Her family moved back home to Prince Edward Island where Doris grew up with her brother, Fr. John Cash and sisters, Theresa, Rosemary, Elaine, and Catherine. Like many Maritimers in the 50s, she moved west, settling in Montreal, Quebec, where she married fellow Islander, John Hilary Moynagh and raised five children. Her home was always open to family and friends as they ventured west of the Maritimes, and she was their best tour guide. That is where we believe our mother got her love of travel.

Doris was a talented seamstress, gardener, and baker. She was renowned for ‘Pineapple Delight’ dessert and ’Green Tomato Chow and Mustard Pickles.’ We still cherish her Christmas handicrafts and fridge towels. She taught grades four through seven in the Montreal Catholic school system until 1980 and her former students sent glowing testimonials to her kindness, compassion, fairness, and humour for her 90th birthday celebration in 2019. They said her “teaching went beyond school lessons to include life lessons like respect and manners” and her “inspiration led them to hold Anne of Green Gables as their all-time favourite novel and to pursue teaching as a profession.”

In 1980 she moved back to her childhood home in Emerald, PEI, where she enjoyed tending her flower and vegetable gardens, decorating her home for Christmas, Easter, and Halloween, and baking, canning, and preserving to feed an army. A devout Catholic, Doris was a member of the Catholic Women’s League and established prayer lines in her community. She was an avid collector of ‘saint’ cards and religious medals and would share them with everyone even her students.

Sadly, in 2018, she left her home of 40 years to live in an apartment at Parkhill Independent Living no longer able to enjoy her gardens and hummingbirds. She made many friends at Parkhill and remained there until her passing.

Predeceased by her husband, John Hilary; eldest son, Don; eldest daughter, Maureen, and grandson, Gregg.

Doris is lovingly remembered and mourned by her sister, Catherine; daughter, Marilyn (David); sons, David (Kerry) and Paul (Ruth); grandson, Jeffrey and granddaughter, Meagan and her many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends in PEI and across Canada.

Her family wish to acknowledge her cousin Jane (Leonard), niece Elly, friend Allan, and niece Ann (Pat) for their support and devotion to our mother when she lived in her home in Emerald and then at her apartment in Summerside. Meals, outings, chores, repairs, and weekly visits gave her the family structure she needed when her own children did not live in PEI. Thank you.

Resting at the Davison Funeral Home, Kensington for visiting hours Friday, April 5th from 4-7 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at the Church of St. James, Summerfield on Saturday, April 6th at 11 a.m. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gregg Moynagh Memorial Fund or to a charity of your choice.
