Three P.E.I. teams reach finals
Stars, Wild, Dukes play for regional championships
It was a big weekend for Prince Edward Island minor hockey teams at three regional championships.
The Down East Auto Parts Eastern Stars, Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild and the Eastern Dukes all played in their respective gold-medal games on April 7. For the latest updates on the three teams, be sure to check out https://www.saltwire.com/prince-edwardisland/.
UNDER-18 GIRLS
In Corner Brook, N.L., the Stars clinched first place and a berth in the championship game with a 1-0 victory over the defending-champion Northern Subway Selects on April 5.
The Stars concluded roundrobin play with a perfect 4-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses) record following a 10-3 win over the host Western Warriors on April 6.
The Stars faced the Selects (3-1-0), who only lost two regular-season games in regulation time, in the final, featuring the top two teams after round-robin play in the five-team tournament.
The winning team will represent the Atlantic region at the Esso Cup Canadian under-18 female hockey championship in Vernon, B.C., from April 21 to 27.
UNDER-18 BOYS
In Lantz, N.S., the Wild defeated New Brunswick-champion Moncton Flyers 6-2 on April 5 and Newfoundland and Labrador’s Pinnacle Growlers 7-0 on April 6 to clinch first place with a record of 3-0-1.
The Wild met the Nova Scotia-champion Halifax Mcdonalds (3-1-0) in the goldmedal game. The top two teams after round-robin play advanced to the final. Halifax finished one point ahead of the host Steele Subaru (3-1-0) for second place.
Teams earned three points for a regulation-time win, two points for a win in overtime and one point for an overtime loss. The winning team of the Atlantic championship will represent the region at the Telus Cup Canadian under18 hockey championship in Membertou, N.S., from April 22 to 28.
UNDER-16
In Moncton, N.B., the Dukes completed round-robin play with a record of 2-0-1 (wonlost-tied).
The Dukes defeated the Moncton Thunderbirds 2-0 and tied the Basin Armada 4-4 on April 6. The Dukes opened the four-team tournament with a 4-0 victory versus the Kings Hockey Club on April 5. The Dukes met the Basin Armada (1-1-1) in the championship game.
