P.E.I. RCMP and conservation officers arrested two drivers and fined a man for fleeing a crash scene as they patrolled across the province over the first weekend of recreational fishing season.

On April 20, at around 9:40 a.m., the team carried out a traffic stop in Alexandra and arrested a 33-year-old man for driving while prohibited.

Police impounded the vehicle for six months, and the man received a $1,550 ticket for failing to comply with the ignition interlock condition.

He was released to appear in court on May 29.

Later that morning, at around 10:50 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop in Mount Albion, which resulted in the arrest of a driver for cannabis-impaired driving.

The driver was issued a seven-day driving suspension, and his vehicle was impounded for three days, but police are waiting for blood test results before laying any charges.

While removing the vehicle from that scene, officers say a 74-year-old driver failed to slow down when approaching the emergency vehicles and hit another car.

The driver left the scene but was pulled over by police and issued a fine for failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Police say no one was injured during the crash.

“The P.E.I. RCMP and conservation officers would like to remind Islanders that it is the law to reduce your speed to half the posted speed limit and move over a lane if safe to do so when passing stopped emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated, including police, conservation, fire department vehicles, ambulances and tow trucks,” says P.E.I. RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Gavin Moore.

Mounties say 62 recreational fishers were checked over the two days without incident.
