The Holland Hurricanes have a new baseball coach for the 2024 season.

Holland College recently announced the appointment of Tyler Johnston of Cardigan, P.E.I., to the post, effective immediately.

“I’m thrilled to step into this role with a program that I take so much pride in being a part of already,” said Johnston in a media release. “I’m looking forward to helping this team maintain a winning culture that has been so well established over the past decade.”

Johnston, who pitched for Holland College during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, replaces Andrew Macnevin, who served as Hurricanes head coach from 2013 to 2023.

Under Macnevin, the Hurricanes have compiled a regular-season record of 11321 (won-lost) while winning four Atlantic championships and five national medals.

Johnston is only the second head coach in the history of the Hurricanes’ baseball program.

Holland College director of recreation and athletics Albert Roche describes Johnston as a great fit for the program.

“He has a solid knowledge of athletics at Holland College, a proven playing and coaching resumé, and a keen interest in developing our baseball program,” said Roche. “He understands the goals in place for the team and our focus on optimizing the student-athlete experience.

“As a former studentathlete with the Hurricanes, and an assistant coach with our team, he understands and connects with our players. We look forward to working

nd with Tyler in an increased capacity moving forward and growing our baseball program together.”

Johnston brings a variety of coaching experiences to the position. Johnston was a member of the P.E.I. under14 and under-16 coaching staffs the last two years and was an assistant and pitching coach with the 2023 edition of the Hurricanes.

PLAYING RESUMÉ

Johnston played at every level of minor baseball in P.E.I., before he was recruited by Mercyhurst North East College (North East, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.).

Johnston was named the Hurricanes’ top pitcher in both seasons and led the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) in strikeouts in 2019.

Johnston not only excelled on the diamond but academically as well while playing with the Hurricanes. Johnston, who studied in the construction technology and management program, earned the Hurricanes Athletic and Academic Achievement Award in his two years at Holland College.

UPCOMING SEASON

The Hurricanes are returning the ACBA in 2024, along with the Acadia Axemen, St. Francis Xavier X-men, UNB Reds, Dalhousie Tigers and Saint Mary’s Huskies.

Regular-season play will begin in early September.
