Young athlete remembered by many during day of fun.
The Port aux Basques Minor Hockey Association came together as a family on March 3 in memory of a fellow hockey player.
The association held its first annual “David’s Day of Hockey” in memory of David Stone, son of Wanda and Mike Stone of Margaree, who died tragically in 2013.
In past years the Blaze Pee Wee Division held a memorial hockey tournament in David’s memory but couldn’t get it off the ground this year because some teams were unable to commit.
Some of the Pee Wee parents knew how much this tournament means to the Stone family and decided to hold a different event in David’s memory. The result was “David’s Day of Hockey,” a fun day for all Port aux Basques minor hockey members.
The event started with a pizza party for all players, followed by two hockey games – one with the Initiation and Novice players and the other with Peewee, Bantam, Midget and Female divisions and a skills competition.
There was a formal opening ceremony with speeches from Channel- Port aux Basques Mayor John Spencer, MHA Andrews Parsons, minor hockey president Steve Lefrense and the Stone family.
Th e minor hockey association presented the family with a shadow box made by Junior Billard, which holds David’s blaze jersey and his skates. Th is box will be displayed at the Bruce Arena.
Feedback from the day’s activities was nothing but positive.
“It was lovely to sit in the stands and listen to everyone cheering for everyone involved,” said Sara Munden. “What a great day to step away from the competition and enjoy what we all love in memory of David.”
Wanda Stone said the day was “nothing short of amazing, the way everyone came together to remember David.”
She said she feared one day her beautiful boy would be forgotten, but so many people have been helping to make sure David’s memory lives on in so many ways.
“Thank you so much to everyone that helped to organize David’s Day of Hockey,” she said. “The shadow box was absolutely beautiful – we are so thankful for everyone involved in making it.”
