National Newspaper Awards recognize Canada’s top journalist­s LOTTERIES

The Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail and Montreal La Presse each bagged four National Newspaper Awards for their work in 2012.

The awards, held in Ottawa, honour the top journalism in Canada each year. The Spectator was up for two awards.

"It’s an honor to be recognized by our peers and reflects the first-class journalism the entire team does at the Spectator does every day,” Spectator Editor in Chief Paul Berton said from Ottawa.

This year ’s competitio­n yielded 1,430 entries from papers across the country, with 26 papers selected as finalists in 22 categories. Hamilton Spectator investigat­e reporter Steve Buist was a finalist in the investigat­ions category for a project that studied the Local Health Integratio­n Networks and their effectiven­ess.

The award went to a Toronto Star investigat­ion by David Bruser and Jesse McLean into why police knowingly lie.

Graphic designer Dean Tweed was also a finalist in the presentati­on category. That award went to Katie Daubs, Spencer Wynn, Nuri Ducassi and Raffi Anderian of the Toronto Star.

Tweed took home an Ontario Newspaper Award last weekend – 36, 37, 39, 41, 44, 46, 47, 50, 51, 56, 67. The Canadian Associatio­n of Journalist­s will host its own awards ceremony in Ottawa Saturday night. Buist is also up for a CAJ award in the open data category, for his series Condition Critical, a special report on the state of health care across the province.

Spectator writer Jon Wells is nominated in the CAJ print feature category for He sang with all his heart, a feature about Chris Skinner, the Waterdown teen who died of alcohol poisoning.
