SUNSHINE, WARM weather and long days … it’s the perfect recipe for outdoor living! Whether a private retreat is your dream or a space designed for a large gathering – creating the perfect property is likely on the minds of many homeowners at this time of the year. So, now is the time to start planning your special little paradise.

In Part One, we discussed all about standard elements – cooking, dining, conversation areas and gardens. However, there are many features that encompass outdoor living. Some are considered luxur ies while others are often necessities. Whatever elements that you choose, remember that both wishes and needs lists go hand-in-hand when developing a great plan, keeping in mind that the needs list always trumps wishes.

Consider the following when planning your outdoors:

NEEDS LIST:

Privacy/Security: Fencing provides both privacy and security while defining property lines. Trees add height to block second floor windows while shrubs enhance and soften the fence perimeters.

Hard Surfaces: From driveways and walkways to decks and patios, hard surfaces are important in outdoor planning and must be considered carefully. Choose the style and size that best suits your individual needs.

Storage: Garden tools and equipment can be stored away safely and out of the elements. A storage building provides protection for outdoor furniture, flower pots and accents during winter months.

Water: Whether the choice is a collection barrel, high efficiency irrigation system or a simple garden hose, a water source is important for the health of both gardens and lawn.

WISH LIST:

Spas/Swimming Pools: Often considered luxury items, a spa or swimming pool can be a delight for any homeowner that enjoys a refreshing dip or soothing soak. Budget definitely is a consideration as is space, by-laws and building codes must be adhered to. Do your research before construction.

Gazebos/Pergolas: There is nothing nicer than dining or relaxing under the protection of a nice structure. Keep in mind that overhead structures do not protect against early or late morning sun – incorporate side panels or shades.

Water Features: Water features are not always expensive. Even a small, recirculating pond or fountain can bring soothing pleasure to an outdoor space. Consider areas that could use a noise buffer and plan wisely.

Building Materials: While flagstone surfaces are beautiful, they are generally an expensive choice. There are however, many types of materials that can do the job and still look wonderful. Remember, it is not the design plan that is affected, it is the choice of materials that best suit your budget.
