Man U manager Moyes is given the pink slip

David Moyes has been fired as manager of Premier League soccer powerhouse Manchester United. He was terminated after just 10 months on the job. Moyes had the unenviable task of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson, Britain’s greatest-ever manager, and United finds itself in seventh place and guaranteed to miss out on Champions League qualification for the first time in 19 years. The 50year-old Scot was less than a season into a six-year contract, but the club’s American owners, the Glazer family, had seen enough. Ryan Giggs, who is still in United’s playing squad at the age of 40, was appointed as United’s temporary coach. Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal, who will leave his position as Netherlands coach after the World Cup in Brazil and has previously coached Barcelona and Bayern Munich, is the favourite to succeed Moyes on a full-time basis.

Chelsea holds Atletico to 0-0 draw

Chelsea’s defensive game plan proved too much for Atletico Madrid as they played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Champions League soccer semifinal on Tuesday. Jose Mourinho’s ultradefensive tactics worked at the Vicente Calderon Stadium despite the early exit of goalkeeper Petr Cech to injury in the 18th minute. Mourinho said Cech and captain John Terry, who was also hurt, are lost for the rest of the Premier League season. Cech injured his left arm in the 15th minute. Terry came off after landing awkwardly on his foot in the 73rd. The return leg is at Stamford Bridge on April 30. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid play Wednesday in the first leg of their semifinal.

Gregg Popovich of the Spurs has been named NBA coach of the year. He is just the third coach in league history to win the award three times in his career, joining Pat Riley and Don Nelson. Popovich led the Spurs to a league-best 62-20 record, which gives them homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. Popovich has led the Spurs to 15 straight 50-win seasons and has won 60 games four times in that span.

Bills QB eager to bounce back from injuries

Raising his right leg for emphasis, Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel says both knees are fine. The next step is shedding the injuries and inconsistencies that limited the first-round draft pick’s development during his rookie NFL season last year. He spoke Tuesday after the start of the Bills’ off-season voluntary conditioning program. Manuel was blunt in assessing his up-anddown season, in which he was sidelined three times because of knee injuries. He went 4-6 on a team that finished 6-10 and extended the NFL’s longest active playoff drought to 14 seasons. Hamilton Spectator news services
