Hamilton police are investigating two robberies on Thursday evening — one involving 12- and 13-year-old suspects. Police responded to the first robbery at about 8:05 p.m. at Big Bear Variety Store on King Street East. Two suspects, one masked and the other brandishing a firearm, entered the store and demanded money from the clerk.

Their demands were not met and the two fled on foot, empty-handed, before police arrived. While at the store, police received reports of a second robbery in the area by suspects with similar descriptions.

Two youths, aged 12 and 13, were arrested on Dunsmure Avenue near Kensington and held for a bail hearing. Police found a replica gun. The two f ace a number of robbery charges, including disguise with intent and using an imitation firearm. Police continue to investigate and additional charges may be laid.

At 9:20 the same night, police were called to investigate a Hamilton taxi driver robbery after the cab picked up a man near the Honest Lawyer on King Street West and drove him to Ontario Street. There, the customer said he had no money and refused to pay the fare. When the driver said he was calling police, the man pulled out a knife. Police say the driver, fearing his safety, drove into a nearby garage door as the suspect fled. He is described as white, about 40 years old, tall, with a muscular build and short blond hair. He wore a yellow and grey winter jacket.
