Body in canal spurs inquiry
The province’s Special Investigations Unit will investigate the death of a 93-year-old man whose body was pulled from the Welland Canal.
The SIU says the man’s body was retrieved from the canal April 1. The day before, around 8:30 p.m., Niagara police received a 911 call about a man at the canal, the agency said. Officers responded and “engaged with the individual.” His body was pulled from the water near the Merritt Park Amphitheatre the next day.
The SIU, which investigated serious injury, assault or death involving police officers, is asking witnesses to call 1-800-787-8529.
