How about it’s up to all of us?

RE: Trashman’s code (March 29)

“If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” How about “It’s up to us”? Paul Wilson’s article was an inspiring challenge to us all. I admire John Gabriel’s tremendous dedication to this task of cleaning up his neighbourhood, and spending every morning doing it.

How easy it could be for us all to take a plastic bag or two in our pockets when we go out, even for a short stroll, and pick up garbage.

I often walk at Fifty Point Conservation area and now that the snow has melted, the amount of abandoned detritus from summer picnics is shocking. Its ugliness severely mars the beauty of the park. When people see this litter, they are apt to toss away even more, thinking that nobody cares. However, if we all do our bit, walkers will be less likely to pollute a pristine site. Like John, we hopefully can be proud to say, “We have left this world a little cleaner than we found it.”

Another idea for the trash problem is for Tim Hortons to step up and give at least a dime discount for people who bring their own cups. Let’s f ace it: we all have at least one travel mug in our car. Ideally they could make it easier for people to recycle their cups.

Currently those red paper containers are littering our environment everywhere — a good commercial for Tim Hortons maybe, but a shameful indictment of our sloppy ways. Valerie Nielsen, Stoney Creek
