Lower speeds on Cootes Drive
RE: Road safety for animals, too (June 14) Thank you Steve Borsellino for your letter about the speed on Cootes Drive. I couldn’t agree more with your comments.
I travel that stretch of road frequently, therefore I anticipate seeing a turtle attempting to cross the road and adjust my speed accordingly. Fortunately I have never seen one trying to cross the road.
What is very disconcerting to me is that most drivers drive at least 80 km /h or more with too many not even adjusting speed to 50 km/h as they approach McMaster University. This is a very short stretch of road that winds its way through protected green space. Why is the speed limit not consistent at 50 km/h to Main Street, especially during the turtle migrating season? Some of these turtles are on the endangered species list. Drivers need to work with conservation people to ensure that these our turtles survive.
It is high time the speed limit is lowered to 50 km/h for the length of Cootes Drive. There is simply no case for an 80 km/h speed limit on Cootes Drive. Patricia Strung, Dundas
