The long view on transit is critical

RE: Strong leadership can clear the way for LRT and other projects (July 6)

The photo with this is telling for a proposed project with a terminus that will not be Eastgate. Prevarication seems more the norm than informed decision-making within our municipal council on LRT. (I.E. The city proposed an LRT with much hype and successfully obtained funding to do so ... and a year later the city is questioning the need and inconvenience of an LRT.)

Effective and efficient transportation which links an elongated municipal area dictated by water on one side and escarpment on the other is essential. This is not de novo thinking. Look to other major urban centres around the world. That such a system has terminals coordinated with existing and proposed Metrolinx terminals (GO Stations at West Harbour and CentennialEastgate) is even more absolute. The reality is Greater Hamilton Area is part of the Greater Toronto Area. Transportation coordination and efficiencies in the GTHA now and in the future will continue to benefit our place in the second biggest economic trading area in the world.

Having a mayor with courage to take a leadership role in a directional debate on ‘how to get it done’ rather than prevaricating on ‘should we’ is heartening ... The long view is critical ... carry on. Edwin R. DeBruyn
