Parkway extension coming

- GORD BOWES

Work on a key link from the Red Hill Valley and Lincoln Alexander parkways to a growing industrial area is expected to be completed by the end of August.

“The goal is to open no later than Labour Day, but we’re trying to get it open as soon as we can,” said Tim Evans, City of Hamilton project manager.

Running from Stone Church Road to Rymal, the Upper Red Hill Valley Parkway (originally referred to as the Trinity Church Road extension) is the first phase of a connection from the four-lane highways to the Red Hill Business Park. The industrial area takes up much of the area between Rymal and Dickenson roads from Nebo to Trinity Church. Work began on the four-lane, nearly two-kilometre stretch, which will also handle traffic to housing developments in upper Stoney Creek, just over a year ago.

The road bed was constructed and allowed to settle over the winter. The final touches — pavement, street lighting, curbing, guard rails, a multi-use pathway on the east side and a bridge over a small creek south of Highland Road — are being done now, said Evans. While the arterial road heads due south from the Red Hill exit ramp at Stone Church, it bends after Highland Road.

“It will eventually link up with Trinity Church Road,” said Evans, “but Trinity Church where it sits now is not its ultimate location.”

Phase 2 will involve moving Trinity Church Road to line up with the Upper Red Hill.
