Wentworth Heights seniors’ complex to open in December

- MARK NEWMAN

The tallest building on the south Mountain is slated to open Dec. 1.

At 10 storeys, the building is the centrepiece of the Village of Wentworth Heights, a $60-million, 258suite seniors’ complex at Rymal and Upper Wentworth that is about 80-per-cent complete.

“We’ve been thrilled with how this project has stayed on course,” said Laura Stokes-Crain, vicepresident of sales and marketing at Schlegel Villages. The Kitchener-based company owns the building along with the 120-bed nursing home next door. Work on the complex began in 2014.

The new seniors building is expected to bring 150 new jobs.

Stokes-Crain said most of the work should be wrapped up by the end of November, and residents will begin moving in right away. So far, 180 of the suites have been reserved.

Crews are busy installing firstfloor patios and doing landscaping work along Rymal Road as well as the finishing touches to the units.

The new building will feature a mix of independent living and fullservice suites with underground and surface parking. There will also be suites for residents suffering from dementia and seniors who require complex physical care.

Stokes-Crain said the new complex will be connected to the nearby nursing home by an enclosed pedestrian main street featuring amenities including a pub, café, chapel, art studio, hobby shop, general store and pet shop.

The model suites on the first floor will be turned into a medical centre and doctor offices that will serve the residents and the community by next spring.

Stokes-Crain said the company is particularly excited about The Ruby, a restaurant on the 10th floor that will be open to the general public starting in December.

The restaurant will offer patrons a view of Hamilton to the north.
