Obama has been a great president

RE: ‘Obama did nothing’ (Letter, July 29)

The letter writer maintains President Barack Obama “has done nothing to improve their (blacks) quality of life.” He says Obama was successful only in enriching himself while in office. His assertions are devoid of facts. Obama’s net is $3.4 million, most if it from book sales and his $400,000 salary.

While Bill and Hillary Clinton made millions in speaking fees, so did presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. After leaving office, Reagan sped to Japan where he made $2,000,000 for two speeches. Bush made $11,000,000 in fees. Conservatives can only complain about Hillary making $250,000 per speech.

Consider that when President George W. Bush took office, he inherited a large surplus and a $5 trillion national debt from President Clinton.

Bush then spent trillions for two wars, a multi-trillion dollar tax break for billionaires, payoffs to the drug industry and trillions to Wall Street to forestall a total collapse of the economy.

Obama inherited a $15-trillion-dollar debt and two lost wars. Obama then pumped $1 trillion into the economy, and went on to add 14 million new jobs (Bush was losing 750,000 jobs/month), save the auto industry, help 18,000,000 get health insurance, stop Iran from getting nukes, repair 50 years of stupidity over Cuba, champion the fight against climate change, reduce ISIS-held territory by 50 per cent ...

He did this while being sabotaged at every turn by Republicans. The hatred conservatives have toward Obama says more about them than this great president. Rex Meade, Dundas
