Probe into man’s death continues
20-year-old found unconscious in Sobeys loading bay
The Ministry of Labour has been asked to help investigate the death of a 20-year-old man who was hit by a delivery truck.
The man died after he was struck in a Waterdown Sobeys loading bay Thursday afternoon.
The pedestrian was taken to hospital from the Dundas Street East grocery store plaza but died of his injuries later in hospital, police said.
The police collision reconstruction unit is investigating. Speed and alcohol have been ruled out as factors.
The ministry has been asked to assist in the investigation, but police have noted the victim wasn’t a Sobeys employee. His name has not been released. Insp. Mike Worster said the man was found in the loading area by the driver of a yellow Planters Peanuts truck, presumably making a delivery to the grocery store.
Hours after the incident, two investigators were inspecting the rear and under the truck, which was parked in the loading area.
“From our examination and investigation it appears that he may have been hit by the truck,” Worster said.
A manager at the Waterdown store declined to comment.
The truck driver was not suspected of being under the influence.
Any witnesses are asked to contact Det. Const. Matt Hewko or Det. Const. Wes Wilson at 905-546-4755.
This is Hamilton’s third pedestrian traffic fatality this year.
