THE BUSINESS CASE: When you think security, perhaps your mind turns to guards patrolling sites to keep them safe. This Hamilton-based company, however, has a more tech-focused approach. Caliber Communications has patented a live, remote-monitoring security service that operates using cellular connection and can be powered using solar energy. No infrastructure is needed on the client’s property. Cameras are installed that stream highdefinition video to the company’s monitoring centre, where staff watches overnight and all weekend. “We do it in real time,” says chief systems engineer Alex Vourkoutiotis. “Our staff can actually pan around the sites and look for things as if they were there without the threat or intimidation.” If something suspicious is happening, staff can use a two-way speaker to caution whoever is in their sights against committing a crime.

WHY IT’S GOOD NEWS: Having this service can help businesses save money by stopping theft, Vourkoutiotis says. For example, it helps builders keep costs down, which in turn can benefit potential home buyers. “The more companies (like Caliber Communications) can save these builders, the more they put into craftsmanship.”
