Mac students with heart orchestrate a massive pizza delivery for the needy
Twenty students from McMaster University’s Humanity First fanned out through downtown Hamilton to deliver 2,000 cheese pizza slices to those in need.
Students also handed out slices Wednesday during the lunch servings at the Salvation Army’s shelter and Notre Dame House, both on York Boulevard.
“It means that people care,” said Charles Perkins as he slid his cafeteria tray along, collecting lunch at the Salvation Army.
He’s been living at the shelter for the past month. “It’s the hardest part of being on the street (knowing whether someone cares).”
“They’re awesome. They are there to help and that’s great,” said Geoff Green as he accepted a serving from student Julie Fayez.
He comes to the shelter every other day or so for lunch.
“It kind of gives you a little bit of hope. Everyone’s tooling along together for a change.”
Humanity First’s funding comes from the McMaster Student Union. The bi-annual program is five years old.
Daniela Delrazo, 20, has helped build schools around the world.
Wednesday was her first experience volunteering locally.
“I feel like as students, it’s so easy to get caught up with all the school work, the tests and assignments we have to do, we focus too much on ourselves. It’s good to get out and give back to the community once and a while,” she said.
“We think that it’s fantastic,” said Dan Millar, public relations director with the Salvation Army.
“It shows them (the students) that there is a big need and how many people there are out there that do need the services of the shelters.”
