Woman, 85, hit by van on Hwy 8 is dead

-

An 85-year-old woman is dead after she was struck by a van on Highway 8 just east of Green Road in Stoney Creek Friday evening.

The woman was crossing Highway 8 about 120 metres west of the intersection when she was hit by a van heading west, said Hamilton police Staff Sgt. Greg Jackson.

She was walking with a 12-yearold girl, who suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution, he said.

The 85-year-old was also taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The woman’s name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Jackson said.

On Friday night, a Dodge Caravan was at the crash scene, which is in front of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

The westbound lanes of Highway 8 from King Street East to Green Road were closed while police investigated the collision.

“At this point, it’s still being investigated to determine whether there are charges or there are not charges,” Jackson said.

Earlier Friday, a driver was taken to hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries after a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 403.

The crash, around 2 p.m. just east of Waterdown Road, involved a motorcycle and “a couple of other vehicles,” the OPP’s Sgt. Kerry Schmidt posted on Twitter.
