Suspect in fatal Montreal carjacking is under arrest
MONTREAL — Montreal police say a suspect is connected with two homicides that left a woman and a man dead in separate incidents.
Major-crimes investigators are linking the two events to a 21-yearold man who was arrested after a lengthy chase in a town south of Montreal earlier today.
But a police spokesperson says there are no links between the two victims.
The suspect remains in police custody and hasn’t appeared in court as of yet.
One of the victims is a 49-yearold woman who was shot late Sunday night in an apparent carjacking in a gas station parking lot in the Pointe-aux-Trembles neighbourhood in the eastern part of the city.
The second is a man in his 20s whose body was found in an eastend apartment Sunday evening.
Montreal police spokesperson Raphael Bergeron said witnesses saw the suspect flee in the woman’s car.
“Police officers found her and she was transported quickly to hospital where she unfortunately died later on overnight,” Bergeron said.
Not long after the shooting, the woman’s vehicle was involved in an accident and was ditched, police said.
Authorities then received a 911 call from a man claiming a gunwielding individual was at his door demanding his car keys.
The suspect shot through the door and police said the man suffered non-life threatening injuries.
After allegedly stealing the second vehicle, the suspect led officers on a lengthy chase that ended up south of Montreal.
The vehicle was found in a ditch near a shopping mall at the intersection of two major highways in Brossard.
The suspect was apprehended by Longueuil police in a parking lot after a short pursuit on foot.
