Fire marshal probing cause of blaze at Cannon Street home
The cost of damage from a fire at a small home on Cannon Street East has been estimated at $30,000.
Firefighters were still trying to determine Monday if the house was occupied at the time of the fire. The fire was discovered Sunday night.
The fire department has asked the city building department to check the structural integrity of the one-a-half-storey house at 325 Cannon St. E., near Emerald Street North.
“The back portion was severely damaged,” said fire department spokesperson Claudio Mostacci. “The building department will assess it.”
The Ontario fire marshal’s office has also been called to investigate because the cause couldn’t be determined. The house sustained “substantial damage” from the blaze.
Mostacci said there were no reported injuries.
However, he was unable to say if the house was occupied at the time but added that will be part of the investigation.
The fire department responded to the call at 8:37 p.m. and found heavy flames upon arrival. Fire spread from the back of the home to the attic.
The fire marshal is also investigating three fires that were set within a short time of each other in the east end early Saturday morning.
Firefighters put out a burning boat on Connaught Avenue South, as well as a garage and vehicle, both a short distance away along Barton Street East. Damage to the garage is estimated at $70,000, while flames caused $15,000 worth of damage to boat and $2,000 to the vehicle.
“Just given the proximity of the scenes and the timeline, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office was called in,” Mostacci said.
