Port Authority, HCE Energy bringing green power to Pier 10

-

The Hamilton Port Authority is bringing green power to its Pier 10.

The Port Authority and HCE Energy Inc. are partnering to build an Industrial District Energy System — a two-megawatt natural gas facility to provide electricity — and hot water and steam to heat or cool the Authority’s tenant buildings on Pier 10.

The energy centre, to be located adjacent to the Arts & Science brewery on Burlington Street East, is part of the Authority’s move to deliver clean and efficient energy to its industrial and business tenants, and to transition into an industrial hub.

In a climate where businesses are worried that the high price of electricity is undermining their ability to grow or even survive, this is an important move, says Ian Hamilton, the Authority’s incoming president and chief executive officer.

The initiative is also “part of the Hamilton Port Authority’s drive to transition the Port of Hamilton into a smart, sustainable transportation and industrial hub,” Hamilton said. The move is part of the Authority’s strategy aimed at reducing energy consumption throughout the Port.

The Port of Hamilton is the largest port in Ontario, with 630 acres on Hamilton’s working waterfront and leasing space to 130 companies employing 2,100 people.

HCE Energy Inc. (formerly Hamilton Community Energy) is a subsidiary of Hamilton Utilities Corporation.
