TEAM OF THE WEEK: HAMILTON SKATING CLUB
The Hamilton Skating Club had 12 skaters compete at 2017 Skate Canada Challenge in Montreal earlier this month.
More than 500 skaters from across Canada competed at this 2nd qualifier (novice, junior, senior) for the 2017 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships taking place in Ottawa Jan. 16-22.
For Pre-Novice level skaters, this is their nationals.
Podium finishers for HSC skaters are as follows:
SENIOR PAIRS: Brittany Jones and Joshua Reagan, Silver Medallists
Brittany and Joshua also compete internationally for Canada. This season they won their first ISU Gold medal at the U.S International Figure Skating Classic - ISU (part of the ISU Challenger series), and competed at the 2016 Skate Canada International (part of the ISU Grand Prix series). Due to their international assignments, Brittany and Josh had a bye for this event but chose to compete.
NOVICE MEN: Alistair Lam, Bronze Medallist
Alistair is a Grade 10 student at Westmount Secondary School. This was his fifth season competing at this national level competition and his second season in Novice Men. Last season Alistair finished 7th at the 2016 CTNSC and represented the City of Hamilton at the 2016 International Children’s (Winter) Games (ICG) in Innsbruck
Austria with a gold medal finish.
Skaters who also advanced to the 2017 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships are as follows (placement indicated after names):
NOVICE ICE DANCE: Bridget LeDonne and Jakub Smal, 12th
Bridget and Jakub are Grade 9 and 10 students respectively at Westmount Secondary School. This was their first season competing at the Novice level and will be attending their first CTNSC. Last season they also competed at the International Children’s Games finishing first on behalf of the City of Waterloo as they split their training time between Hamilton and the
Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club. They also finished 4th at the PreNovice nationals held at the 2016 Skate Canada Challenge event last season.
