Nature centre reopens and welcomes students
— Apps’ Mill Nature Centre has reopened after major renovations.
The centre hosts outdoor learning programs for elementary and high school students, runs naturebased programming for families and runs day camps.
“The renovations give the nature centre a fresh, clean and open look,” said Duane Brown, environmental education specialist.
“There are more learning spaces, and our staff are excited to have students back and involved in our hands-on programs that teach environmental concepts and foster an appreciation for the natural world,” he added.
The $435,000 renovation includes many accessibility upgrades to the main entrance, an elevator, a gender-neutral accessible washroom on the upper level, and the bathrooms on the lower level were also upgraded. A vestibule was added at the back of the centre to make it easier to store coats and more outdoor equipment storage.
“We’re thrilled with the renovations, which provide an inclusive space and greater access for people of all ages to connect with nature and learn about the Grand River watershed,” said Tamara Anderson, environmental educator and day camp co-ordinator.
When spring starts, students will be using a new outdoor classroom just west of the nature centre building.
The Grand River Conservation Authority was able to complete the renovations because it received a Canada 150 Community Infrastructure grant for $137,000. The rest of the funding comes from donations to the Grand River Conservation Foundation which includes SC Johnson Ltd., Don and Jo-Anne Wilkin, the Cowan Foundation and the estate of Mary Stedman.
The Apps’ Mill Nature Centre was built in 1981 with a donation from SC Johnson. It has been closed since November.
