Change the world

- AISHAH AFTAB, GRADE 6 JANET LEE ELEMENTARY

Many children have started programs, or inspired adults to start organizations that have helped to make changes in the world, for the better. If you have the will, you can do practically anything. All you have to do is really care about something like protecting wildlife, helping out after a natural disaster, organizing a food drive to help poor people or signing a petition to improve human rights. Think about how you can change the world. It’s really easy, because all you have to do is try.

Students from Janet Lee Elementary School have been really trying to make a difference. For example, students were asked to bring in gently used books to donate to a nearby women’s shelter. Another group of students organized a toy drive, donating all the toys to McMaster Children’s Hospital. We also organized a clothing drive!

Our teachers asked us, the Grade 6 students, to choose an organization that we care about or an issue that we are passionate about. Then, we brainstormed and discussed ways that they could help. Then, we started taking action! Even though our actions were not always grand, we are helping to make positive changes. If other schools started changing the world for the better, I think that would make a big difference! The world really doesn’t seem that big anymore now, does it?
