Label GMO foods, let consumers decide

-

RE: GMO labels: Why this farmer takes it personally (June 12)

The argument presented by Andrew Campbell against the labelling of GMO foods is laughable when reduced to its basic logic. He essentially argues that he personally has decided that GMO’s are safe, and since it hurts his feeling to have his judgment questioned, nobody should disagree with him and demand the right to make an informed decision for themselves.

He also trots out many of the stock false arguments in favour of farming using GMO’s. He states that they reduce pesticide usage, while neglecting to mention that planting GMO crops has lead to a massive increase in the use of Roundup (glyphosate), a suspected carcinogen that in my experience is also a culprit in the current problems impacting pollinators like honeybees and butterflies.

He claims that the “science community and government regulators” have deemed GMOs safe, even though they would have made their decisions based solely on studies and lobbying efforts funded by GMO manufacturers.

If Mr. Campbell really believes in the superiority of GMO food products, why not label them and let the public decide? He is in no way qualified to make that decision for the rest of us.
