Wishing Star

- BY OCEAN JUHLKE, GRADE 12

(Inspired by the NASA Rover, which once called the Earth it’s wishing star, and that seemed like the most beautiful thing to me) hello, my wishing star my dear, dear far away I can barely see you now but it does not matter I know you are there and if I know that you are listening then it does not matter what they say

hello, my wishing star they’re telling me to move on now that like a comet, you’ve passed me by they say I should let you go but they don’t know the soft starlight the quiet moments when it’s just us

hello, my wishing star there is no sign left of you or the ones that told me to give up and I feel so alone I wish I could kiss the sky and brush my lips against your glow one last time for you to whisper in my ear to bask in your stoic wisdom and be enlightened

goodbye, my wishing star my final peace I’ve found a star is just a ball of light bursting and while I was pining you had become a fiery inferno I cared only for you to hear me to listen to my dreams and to rest in your warmth and so, I beg, forgive me though you no longer listen my dear, dear wishing star…
