The Hamilton Spectator

Pencil and Eraser

- BY AUDREY A. AND ARIEL B-K, GRADE 12 - Inspired by a class activity with Chukky Ibe from the Hamilton Youth Poets.

I write this poem to you through your writing I cannot write for myself, your grip is too strong Please loosen your fingers around my neck You’re writing my words with so much force Just let me speak for myself I know you love me for my plastic casing because I’m reusable You push my buttons looking for more

How many times did I see what she felt But allowed myself to erase her mistakes for her Allowed her to draw, use, and abuse me As she tore pieces of me away through times of stress and terror Allowed her to turn me into someone I’m not And happily played the part I was dropped, thrown, borrowed and taken away Yet she always came back for me. Unsure if I was ecstatic over being found Upset over being left Or proud of being kneaded How many times will being useful make me disappear ever so slowly

But until then, I’ll forgive you You give me direction You give me a voice, even if it’s not my own You brought me to life

I’ll write the future for us And you’ll be there to erase the past
