Saturday 1895 - The American Bowling Congress forms (New York City). 1904 - Boston Herald again refers to New York baseball club as Yankees, when it reports “Yankees take 2.” The name does not become official until 1913. 1928 - Silvio Cator of Haiti sets long jump record at 26 feet 0.25 inches. 1936 - New York Yankees clinch 8th pennant. 1945 - Jimmie Foxx hits his 534th and final home run. 1960 - 4th American Football League plays first game (Denver 13, Boston 10). 1965 - Sandy Koufax pitches his fourth no-hitter, a perfect game versus Chicago Cubs (1-0). 1968 - First U.S. Open tennis tournament, held as an “open.” (Arthur Ashe wins). 1968 - Minnesota Vikings’ Tommy Krammer passes for six touchdowns vs Green Bay Packers (42-7). 1978 - Third game of the Boston Massacre; New York Yankees beat Boston Red Sox 7-0. 1978 - Baltimore Orioles pull their 7th triple play (5-4-3 versus Toronto Blue Jays). 1979 - John McEnroe beats Vitas Gerulaitis for the U.S. Open Tennis title. 1983 - Vitas Gerulatis bets his house that Martina Navratilova can’t beat the 100th ranked male tennis player. 1984 - John McEnroe beats Ivan Lendl for the U.S. Open Tennis title. 1984 - California Angels’ Michael Witt is 11th to pitch a perfect baseball game. 1987 - Nolan Ryan strikes out his 4,500th batter. 1989 - Steffi Graf beats Martina Navratalova for the U.S. Open championship. Sunday 1950 - Joe DiMaggio becomes first to hit three home runs in a game at Griffith Stadium. 1960 - New York Yankees player Mickey Mantle hits 643-foot home run over right field roof in Detroit, Michigan. 1960 - Running barefoot, Ethiopian Abebe Bikila wins Rome Olympic marathon. 1962 - Rod Laver wins the Grand Slam of tennis. 1965 - Philadelphia Phillies’ 10,000th game to a decision since 1900, Phillies beat St. Louis Cardinals. 1969 - New York Mets sweep Montreal Expos putting them in first place for first time. 1972 - Emerson Fittipaldi is youngest to win an auto race World Championship. 1972 – U.S. Men’s Olympic basketball team’s first loss, 51-50 to USSR (disputed). 1973 - Muhammad Ali defeats Ken Norton. 1973 - New York Jets trade pro football’s leading receiver Don Maynard to St. Louis Cardinals. 1974 - Lou Brock ties (104) and then sets (105) baseball stolen base mark. 1974 - Teuvo Louhivouri sets cycling distance record of 515.8 miles in 24 hours. 1977 - Toronto Blue Jays beat New York Yankees 19-3 with 20 hits. 1978 - 4th game of the Boston Massacre; New York Yankees beat Boston Red Sox 7-4.
