Why should I pay for stranded tourists?

- RE: hurricane evacuations

In response to those who think the government should help them out of hurricane ravaged areas, I would like to point out that, if they had checked the Government of Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories website before they travelled, they would have seen that hurricane season is June through November.

Also, under the large Scale Emergencies section, it clearly states that the government will endeavour to help citizens caught in natural disasters but will charge the evacuation expense to those persons. This is only fair! Why should I, a taxpayer who knows enough to stay away from hurricane prone areas, have to foot the bill for the ignorance of those who ignore the warnings?

This same situation seems to occurs at our waterfalls where careless people expect to be rescued free of charge. It is time people took responsibility for their own behaviour. Marion Brooks, Dundas
