Are ‘binners’ getting what they deserve?

-

RE: Another’s treasure (Sept. 16)

While I admire the initiative and hard-work of the ‘binners’ who rely on salvaging usable material from trash to supplement their income, I’m sure that pushing their carts through snowdrifts in sub-zero winter temperatures and the sweltering heat of the summer is a physically taxing pursuit, particularly for the older men. It made me wonder if they were aware that they, along with all Canadian seniors, are entitled to not only an Old Age Pension but a Guaranteed Income Supplement that would result in a monthly income for a single individual of $1,456.

Surely those men who are eligible and who now receive such meagre compensation for their valuable contribution to waste reduction in our city should be advised as to the social benefits to which they are entitled. Janice Denyer, Dundas
