Jane Austen is known for the novels she wrote two hundred years ago and the more recent movie adaptations. The era during which she lived and wrote, known as the Regency period in England, paralleled the years when the Gage family lived in Battlefield House.
Experience the elegance of the Regency era at Battlefield House Museum & Park’s ‘Austentacious’ – A Regency Romp on Saturday, November 25 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Cellar at Grandview (Nash Jackson House) in Battlefield Park. Celebrate the writings of author Jane Austen and help bring the charm of the early 19th century to life with costumes, music, dancing and refreshments. The cost is $20 per person and preregistration is required. Tickets for the event can be purchased online at www.hamilton.ca/battlefield or by calling 905-662-8458.
Enjoy a rare opportunity to see Whitehern Historic House dressed in its Christmas finery in the evening at Won’t It Be Jolly! on Saturday, December 9 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (family program runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The adult program runs from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.) Gather in the cozy stable for charades, hot drinks and sweet treats, then head up to the house for carols and a leisurely walk-through of the home with costumed interpreters telling stories of three different eras of Christmas past on display.
Discover the children’s toys including dolls given to Ruby and Hilda in 1882 as well as cannons, skates, story books and much more. The monogrammed china purchased in 1855 will adorn the dining room table as it did for over one hundred years. Details culled from the family letters will bring their Christmas celebrations to life; as Ruby wrote in 1902, “Hurrah, won’t it be jolly!” Event fees are: Adults $10, Seniors/Students $9, Children $8, Family $30. Register today by calling 905-546-2018 or email whitehern@hamilton.ca. For additional information, visit www.hamilton.ca/whitehern.
The Holiday Season is a time for gathering with family and friends. Sir Allan MacNab, Premier of the United Provinces of Canada (1854-1856), and his family joined together to celebrate in their beautifully decorated home known as Dundurn - a 40-room Italianate-style villa built in the 1830s on Burlington Heights; the former site of a fortified military encampment established by the British in 1813. Today Dundurn Castle tells the story of the family who lived above stairs and the servants who lived and worked below stairs to support their affluent lifestyle.
Delight in a unique opportunity to see Dundurn Castle decorated for Christmas in the evening on December 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Begin with carol-singing in the front hall followed by an extended tour of the home, and a chance to sample an assortment of traditional Christmas foods served in Dundurn’s historic kitchen.
Christmas Evening Tours are $30 per person and pre-registration is required. Purchase your tickets online at www.hamilton.ca/ dundurn or call 905-546-2872.
