I can’t be bothered is no excuse

RE: The age of convenience

Our city council has a very demanding task of providing all the services people want. But how about the rest of the people that live here? There is much that every citizen can do that will benefit all … but for many it’s not convenient.

Less than 40 per cent of eligible voters vote and the rest don’t find it convenient.

For years people have been encouraged to stop using plastic grocery bags and bring their own. However, most people still demand that stores provide plastic bags. Many jurisdictions have banned plastic bags.

We have a worldwide crisis with plastics that are destroying the oceans and filling up our landfills. Yet people continue to buy cases of water bottles because it’s convenient.

Our city has asked us to recycle and compost yet more than half don’t because it’s not convenient.

Our city has asked us to use public transit more or cycle, but most can’t be bothered.

Enbridge is building a 35-km oil pipeline right through our city to supply oil to the U.S., but except for a few concerned citizens, the rest of people living here don’t see this as an issue, even though thousands of trees have been destroyed and water ways may be impacted.

There are thousands of our citizens who need food and clothing. Yet when was the last time you bothered to donate clothes and food to the needy? That’s not convenient either.

What will it take to change? R. Caruk, Hamilton
