Police arrest man wanted in Six Nations standoff

-

OHSWEKEN — Police have arrested a man wanted for allegedly confronting a group of elementary school parents on Six Nations armed with a gun more than a week ago. Brett Elgin Elliott, 49, was arrested Tuesday afternoon by the OPP and Six Nations Police at a residence on Tuscarora Road.

After receiving tips from the community, Six Nations Police and OPP officers worked to contain the property beginning late Monday night and into early Tuesday morning.

Elliott ran when officers fanned out around the home but was later spotted in a bush near 2201 Third Line Road, police said. He then surrendered without incident.

Police had been looking for Elliott since March 4, when a group of concerned parents approached Elliott’s house at 2130 Cayuga Rd. over alleged drug activities near I.L. Thomas Odadrihonyanita Elementary School. Three allegedly armed men — one believed to be Elliott — were there as parents complained about drug paraphernalia, including syringes, on the school grounds. No shots were fired, but the parents backed off and called police.

Six Nations Police and OPP executed a search warrant at the Cayuga Road home last week — the same location where four people were removed the week prior, including a 93-year-old grandmother. But Elliott avoided capture at that location, police said.

Police said Elliott has a number of warrants for his arrest on various charges, including firearms offences, assault to resist arrest, and possession of stolen property over and under $5,000.
