Burlington, Milton transit systems getting funding
BURLINGTON — Burlington’s and Milton’s public transit systems will be receiving millions in funding as a result of a bilateral agreement between the federal government and province.
The announcement was made March 16 via media releases, a day after a media conference stated Oakville’s public transit system was getting a combined investment of $66.3 million through the same agreement, and the Town of Oakville, over the next decade to help build new urban networks and service extensions.
Burlington Transit will receive $18 million in federal funding and $14.9 million in provincial funding, while Milton Transit gets more than $3.9 million (federal) and more than $3.2 million (provincial) to enhance its respective networks.
The bilateral agreement — signed by Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi and Ontario Minister of Infrastructure Bob Chiarelli, on March 14 — is investing in four priority areas: public transit; green infrastructure; community, culture and recreation infrastructure; and rural and northern community infrastructure.
It plans to dedicate more than $11.8 billion (in federal funding) and $10 billion (in provincial funding) to infrastructure projects.
The projects, supported by the Investing in Canada plan, will be cost-shared with the Ontario government, municipalities and other partners, stated a media release.
