Firearms report sparks closure of busy intersection

-

Hamilton police are investigating after a report of firearms closed a busy downtown intersection and put a local school and office in a hold-and-secure situation on Friday afternoon.

Police say they received information that a man was seen carrying two firearms near Victoria Avenue South and Main Street East. He took them into a residence on Victoria, it was reported.

Police say they closed Victoria from Main to Stinson Street as well as the Claremont Access and asked the public to stay away from the area. They re-opened the intersection around 4:30 p.m.

St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School and the Ontario Works office also received a hold-and-secure order that was later lifted.

Police detained two “persons of interest.”

Police say no firearms were found in the residence but they continue to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Const. Frank Bogdan at 905-546-4861.
